Expansion of Rea Vaya BRT Infrastructure

The Rea Vaya BRT trunk network will be extended by 16km from the Johannesburg CBD into the suburbs in northern Johannesburg. It will connect the inner city nodes of Hillbrow and Braamfontein along Louis Botha Avenue past Alexandra to Marlboro and from there to the Sandton CBD along Katherine Street. The trunk route will be served by feeder routes to and from places including Midrand, Ivory Park, Sunninghill and Randburg.

Rea Vaya infrastructure roll-out timelines:

September 2015
  • Temporary demarcation of Sandton Public Transport Loop;
  • Construction of kerb side bus shelters;
August 2016
  • Completion of pedestrian and cycling links between Alexandra and Sandton, including the bridge across the M1;
December 2016
  • Completion of BRT lanes from Zandspruit Bridge to Marlboro Drive along Katherine Street as well as mobility improvements
November 2017
  • Completion of all BRT infrastructure and start of Rea Vaya services
2018/19
  • Extension of Rea Vaya services to the Randburg CBD
  • Cycling Infrastructure
