In tandem with the National Development Plan the City of Johannesburg initiated a far-reaching and comprehensive process to redefine its future vision, objectives and targets. The Joburg 2040 GDS responds to the multiple challenges facing the country’s largest city, the economic dynamo of the southern African region, and provides a framework for increased resilience, liveability and sustainability in the future.
With the regards to transport the GDS makes a number of far-reaching recommendations, including:
- Public transport, walking and cycling should be the modes of choice for all Johannesburg residents. This must be achieved by reducing congestion and high transport costs through the provision of quality public transport services and improvements to public transport infrastructure.
- Improved mobility and accessibility will enhance economic growth and development.
- Public transport infrastructure must include roads that serve all road users including public transport users, pedestrians and people of all ages and abilities.
